About
Kauai
Hawaii's Garden Island
Kauai, also known as the Garden Island,
is the northernmost of the 4 largest islands in the Hawaiian
archipelago. It
was formed about 50 million years ago and according to legend, is the handiwork
of Pele, Goddess of Fire, who is still actively at work on the Big Island. It's shape is roughly circular with an area of
about 550 square miles. One major road circumnavigates the majority of the
island although the 17-mile Napali Coast is too rugged for roads and can only be
seen by air, sea, or backpacking. Think of the primary road as a horseshoe
with the part between the open ends being inaccessible by car. The
population of Kauai County which includes the islands of Kauai and nearby Niihau
is somewhat in excess of 60,000 residents, a relatively small number.
On Kauai, most every day is a pleasant day
regardless of the time of year. The Winter months are slightly cooler than
Summer and a bit more rainy. Daytime temperatures are always pleasant and
the evening coolness a nice change, sometimes slightly on the chilly side in
Winter.
The highest point on Kauai is Mount
Waialeale at 5,148 feet. It's known as the wettest spot on earth (over 400
inches of rain per year) but it's very localized to this inaccessible area and leaves most of the
remainder of the island basking in sunshine.
