Aloha Airlines and ATA suddenly ceased service in April 2008.  Aloha Airlines provided service both within Hawaii and to the mainland.  ATA provided mainland flights only.  This is sad news for Hawaii residents and most especially the airline employees.  Aloha Airlines was much more than an airline to Hawaii residents, it was family!  Interisland travel appears to be relatively normal with plenty of seats available on Hawaiian Airlines and Go Airlines.  Other airlines continue to meet travel needs between the mainland and Hawaii.

NCL America cruise line has announced a reduction in it's Hawaii capacity effective February 2008 when the Pride of Hawaii will be reassigned to Europe.  However, Pride of Aloha and Pride of America will remain in Hawaii service.  A recent check of prices revealed that a week's cruise could be booked for as little as $499, an outstanding bargain for those already in Hawaii.

Hawaii Superferry service is officially taking reservations for interisland service beginning September 5.  The first ferry, the Alakai, will provide service between Kauai, Oahu, and Maui.  A second ferry with service to the Big Island is planned in 2009.  A test reservation for 2 adults plus car showed a travel time of 3 hours and a price of $424.85 including discounts.  Whether this is competitive with flying and renting a car depends on the length of stay and whether the low air fares spawned by newcomer Go! Airlines continue.  Discounts are available for children, senior citizens, and retired military personnel.  For comparison to flying, air fare ranges from $29 to over $100, excess baggage is $25 per piece, parking is $9/day, and car rental is around $46/day.  Published fares do not include a fuel surcharge which adds 30% or so to the cost when booking.

University of Hawaii economists say that construction has not yet peaked in Hawaii.  Multiple new projects are underway on Kauai ranging from affordable housing to communities offering the ultimate in tropical lifestyles.  Perhaps one of the most unique is right in Lihue itself.  One of the most luxurious is right down from my office in our biggest resort area, Poipu.  Can you imagine your semi-private elevator dropping you off at your own private landing?  There's much more and most are not published in the multiple list service.  Contact me for detailed information on these exciting developments.
